Italian sparkling wine flies: in one year 1 billion bottles were produced, to be exact 998 million pieces (Icqrf data) with an increase of 17 percent compared to the previous year's production. “A unique fact on the world scene – says Francesco D'Agostino director of Cucina & Vini and editor of the guide – Sparkle, the authoritative guide of Italian sparkling wines – symptom of an international success destined to consolidate and expand to all production areas. Drinking bubbles is a trend and has also become a fashion, coming to free the dry sparkling wine from confinement to a celebration product, bringing it definitively into its natural bed, from the aperitif to the table. This phenomenon has had a strong acceleration in the last five years”.
With these premises - and above all in view of the Christmas and New Year holidays - the interest of enthusiasts for the presentation of Sparkle is strong, which on Saturday 27 November will offer 200 sparkling wines for tasting at The Westin Excelsior hotel in Via Vittorio Veneto, Rome , including the 95 best Italian bubbly labels awarded this year with the "five spheres" among the approximately 900 present in the guide.
The most represented region is Lombardy, thanks to the 37 awards received mostly by wines belonging to the Franciacorta DOCG appellation; at an altitude of 20, Trentino, with only Trento DOC; Veneto follows, with 17 awards, with an overwhelming majority Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG; then Piedmont (7), Alto Adige (4), Puglia (3), Abruzzo (2) and, with one cellar each, Valle d'Aosta, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Lazio and Sicily.
Among these Mondo Food points out a selection of wines of exceptional quality that can certainly compete with more famous wines. “The result of six months of tastings – underlines Francesco D'Agostino – Sparkle 2022 paints a very comforting picture of the quality of the world of Italian bubbles. In twenty years of reporting, all the sparkling wine phenomena of the country have been analyzed and told through the tasting of their expressions in the bottle, recording a very important growth, accompanied by an enlargement, not foreseeable twenty years ago, of the base of the companies involved in the production .
