There is little talk about it because the interests at stake are huge but recently the World Health Organization (theWHO so abhorred by the administration Trump) has established on the basis of scientific literature and new epidemiological research that thealcohol (and therefore wine, beer and alcoholic beverages) Is carcinogenic. Of course, quantity has its weight and "drinking little gives less probability of carcinogenesis than those who drink a lot" but the WHO verdict on alcohol is unequivocal and must be respected without destroying the beer industry and especially the wine industry which in our country is an excellence. How then should we behave? In his weekly column on health published in "Today” the famous pharmacologist and oncologist Silvio Garattini gives some very important common sense advice. First: the WHO verdict must be respected but the prohibition it is not the best way because "we are a country where freedom exists and prohibition has never triumphed". Second: if someone wants to harm themselves and continue to drink alcohol they must be able to do so but it is essential that they know it and that - as happens with tobacco - it is crucial that bottles of wine and beer have an unequivocal label on them that explains that those drinks are carcinogenic. But there is more and we come to the third piece of advice: "It is important - Garattini claims - that research is developed to have dealcoholated wine as there is already dealcoholized beer. In this way, reconciling health and industry is not impossible, but information, research, investments and good will are needed. Garattini is right: the fight against cancer depends on all of us every day.
