FS Group, expanded the ERTMS system on the Rome-Florence high-speed line

RFI (Italian Railway Network) e Italferr, a company of the Infrastructure Pole of FS Group, they installed the ERTMS technology in stretch between South Arezzo e South Orvieto, for a total of 85 kilometres.

It is the second intervention of technological upgrade following the simultaneous activation, in December 2020, of the first Rovezzano-Arezzo Sud section (64 km) and of the related Multistation Computerized Central Equipment (ACCM).

The total investment was approx 150 million euro, financed with PNRR funds.

What is the ERTMS system

Il ERTMS system (European Railway Traffic Management System) is the most advanced system for supervision and control of train spacing, capable of ensuring better regularity and management of rail transport. The system also allows the achievement of interoperability between the national networks.

THEtooling of the ERTMS system on the whole line yes will end in September 2024, with the activation of the technology on the remaining 88 kilometers between Orvieto Sud and Settebagni.

Upon completion of the line, there will be 240 kilometers of the direct Rome-Florence route which will be added to the more 700 kilometers of AV lines already equipped with ERTMS technology.

Il FRY plan, which envisages an investment of 13 billion euros over 15 years, is to equip the entire network, approximately 16 kilometres, with the ERTMS system by 2036.

The implementation of the plan was able to benefit from a strong acceleration in the last twelve months thanks to the publication of two European tenders, of the total value of 3,2 billion euros, to build 4800 kilometers of network by 2027.
