On a difficult day for rail transport, marked by a fault between Rome Termini and Tiburtina stations which has blocked traffic on a national scale, causing delays to high-speed, regional and intercity trains, there is also a breath of fresh air in rail transport. In fact, at the Rome Ostiense station, at the presence of the CEO of Trenitalia, Louis Corradi, Was “Regional” officially unveiled, new brand that identifies Trenitalia local trains, designed to improve the experience of commuters, students, workers and tourists. With a strong focus on sustainability and intermodality, this project represents an evolution in local rail transport.
The new “Regional” brand
The new “Regional” brand was born with theaim to offer a modern, sustainable and increasingly intermodal service, intended for commuters, students, workers and tourists.
“Il rebranding is another important step. By now, on regional transport we have nothing to envy abroad. It has been like this for some time on the Frecce, now it is becoming like this also on regional trains", he stated Corradi during the presentation. This new identity is not just about the aesthetics of the trains, but reflects a technological and operational revolution, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

Innovation and sustainability at the center
Il Renewal program of the Trenitalia regional fleet is ambitious. During the presentation, Corradi explained how, thanks to theinvestment of over 7 billion of euros between 2018 and 2027, Trenitalia is completely renewing its regional fleet. “We have already delivered 1.061 new latest-generation trains and there are still 226 trains missing that will be operational by 2027. The Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do,” said Corradi, highlighting how the company is working towards increasingly intermodal mobility, with the introduction of integrated solutions between trains and other means of transport. The new fleet includes double-deck, single-deck and hybrid electric trains, all designed to reduce the environmental impact of rail transport.
The new “Regional” brand also stands out for its green approach, underlined by the green color of the new train liveries and the introduction of advanced technologies to improve energy efficiency. “We have replaced 80% of the regional fleet with new trains and our trains, explains Corradi, have a 97% recyclability level with the new convoys having a consumption of about 30% less than the traditional ones”. “This is only the beginning of a path that will lead us towards an increasingly green and intermodal mobility”, underlined Corradi.

Regional numbers: a green and intermodal future
The “Regional” service carries over 400 million passengers per year (1,5 million per day), with more than 6.000 daily trips. Thanks to the service contracts stipulated with the Regions, which amount to approximately 51 billion euros until 2032, Trenitalia is committed to improving the quality of service with the aim of making the travel experience more accessible and sustainable.
La digitization plays a key role in this transformation. Since September 21, the digital ticket has been validated automatically, while the Tap&Go payment system allows passengers to pay more easily. These innovations have contributed to making raise the level of satisfaction of travellers at 92%.
Even on the employment front the numbers are important: the regional transport sector employs approximately 13.500 FS Group employees.
Corradi: “extraordinary work done, we are building something important”
During the press conference, Louis Corradi reiterated the importance of the work done to date: “We have done a extraordinary work with all the Regions, joining forces to improve regional transport. We have invested 7 billion euros, and this allows us to look to the future with confidence”. Corradi also underlined how intermodality is becoming a consolidated reality: “People enter the train with their bicycles, and this is true sustainable intermodality”.

With an eye to the future, Corradi concluded: “It is not just a question of numbers, but of vision. We are building something important that we will leave to future generations, and this is just the beginning."
To celebrate the launch of the new brand, Trenitalia has “Rebel Revolution Fest” organized, a musical event that will be held on October 4 and 5 at Parco Schuster in Rome. In collaboration with RTL 102.5 and Radio Zeta, the event aims to involve the public, especially young people, promoting the link between the new generation and the future of rail transport in Italy.
