In February 2025, the electricity consumption in Italy have registered a 0,6% increase, at 24,9 billion kWh, compared to the same month in 2024. However, according to data released by Terna the raw data shows a decrease of 2,1%, strongly influenced by the comparison with a leap year. The decrease, in fact, was attenuated by corrective factors, such as the working day less (20 versus 21) and the average temperature lower by 1,5°C.
A level territorial, the adjusted variation was positive in the North and Centre, with an increase of 0,8%. In the South and the Islands, however, demand remained stable.
In the first two months of the year, adjusted national electricity demand showed an increase of 1%, while the raw data marked a contraction of 0,5%.
Industrial consumption down, services up
As regards the industrial consumption, the Imcei index by Terna, which measures the consumption of energy-intensive companies, has recorded a decline of 8,4% compared to February 2024. The leap-year adjusted change is -6,1%. The negative trend was reflected in all sectors, with a 5,5% reduction in industrial consumption in the first two months of 2025. In cyclical terms, seasonally adjusted, calendar and temperature adjusted electricity demand is slightly down compared to January 2025 (-0,5%), with a decline also for the Imcei index (-2,5%).
As far as the 'Index Enter, which is based on monthly electricity consumption provided by network operators, in December 2024 there was a positive change of 4,6% compared to December 2023. Overall, in 2024 consumption increased by 4% compared to the previous year.
Renewable Energy: Photovoltaic on the Rise, but Wind and Hydro on the Decline
In the month of February, the electricity production in Italy 83,7% of the demand was covered by domestic production, with the remaining 16,3% satisfied by foreign trade. amount of energy imported fell by 33,6% compared to February 2024, reaching 4,1 TWh.
In terms of renewable, these have covered 29,1% of electricity demand. In detail, the production from PV grew by 10,4%, while that thermal increased by 21,3%. On the contrary, the water sources recorded a decrease of 7,5%, the wind farms decreased by 44,4% and the Geothermal recorded a decrease of 6,2%. The most significant data concerns the continuous reduction in production from carbon, which recorded a -42,3% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The storage capacity
In 2025, the renewable capacity in operation increased by 820 MW, but the figure is 512 MW (-38%) lower than the same period in 2024.
Finally, as of February 28, 2025, in Italy there were approximately 761 thousand storage systems installed, with a total capacity of 13.480 MWh and a nominal power of 5.811 MW.
