Bad weather: alarm for Po and Tiber, cyclonic vortex until Monday

Bad weather: alarm for Po and Tiber, cyclonic vortex until Monday

The northern lane of the Brenner motorway was reopened just before midnight on Saturday after a blockage that lasted several hours. However, the movement of cars is slowed down because only the fast lane is passable. The normal traffic lane is occupied by heavy vehicles. The northbound carriageway was blocked on Friday evening and subsequently closed, due to dozens of lorries which, lacking winter equipment, were no longer able to continue their journey following the heavy snowfall on Friday. Various criticisms from truck drivers and motorists who complain of not having information and especially in the most difficult stages during the night. But the A22 Brennero motorway replies: "The serious disruption to traffic in the last 24 hours near the Brenner pass was mostly caused by failure to comply with the rules". The note recalls "the obligation in force along the entire A22 to fit winter tires or have snow chains on board".

Flood alarm and "code orange", however, in Lombardy, where the level of the Po has risen by three metres, and in Tuscany for hydrogeological-hydraulic risks in the Bisenzio-Ombrone Pistoiese and Mugello-Vadisieve areas. This was communicated by the Civil Protection of the Metropolitan city of Florence. The rains are decreasing but there are still increases in hydrometric levels due to last night's rainfall. The Ombrone stream has passed the second level at the Poggio a Caiano hydrometer, while the Bisenzio river remains above the first level at the San Piero a Ponti hydrometer.

Concern for the flooding of the Tiber also in Rome: access to the docks closed. This was announced by the Security and Civil Protection Department of Roma Capitale communicating "the successful closure of the accesses to the banks of the Tiber in the urban section with the exceeding of the first attention threshold of the level of the river Aniene (SA1)". The staff keep a constant eye on the levels. The cyclonic vortex will persist in Italy until Monday, even if it will only affect the southern regions: in the North the weather is expected to be bad only on Sunday, while the sun will return on Monday.
