The Future of the Arctic at Sioi
Arctic Connections is an event that Sioi has been organizing annually since 2018 and which is gaining more and more interest year after year, given the centrality of the area under the spatial, energy, logistics and infrastructural profile. For the uninitiated, it should be remembered that to date, sovereignty over the Arctic is exercised by the Arctic Council, a body that brings together the United States for Alaska, Denmark for Greenland, as well as Russia and Canada. Specifically, this year's edition, "Space in the Arctic", will be an opportunity to discuss the prospects for better governance of Space and for the prosperity of the Arctic through international cooperation.
Also within the framework of Arctic Connections, on Wednesday 2 April the conference “Italy and Japan – Common Perspective in the Arctic” will be held, organised by Marina Militare in collaboration with Sioi and the Japanese Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
Arctic: Climate Change
Also due to climate change, the Arctic represents "an extremely important economic and commercial scenario in which the Italian presence is increasingly strengthening. The sustainability is one of the requirements for the development of the region and the Italian aerospace sector is among the protagonists in terms of infrastructure investments. Both Space and the Arctic, as extreme territories, offer great opportunities, but also significant challenges; a factor that unites them is the need to seize the opportunities with a conscious and sustainable approach, through a shared governance for the balance between economic development and environmental protection, resource management, security and research”, as the conference organizers write. The event will see the participation of the academic, military, political, diplomatic world and the most important Italian and Norwegian industrial entities in the aerospace and defense sector.
