The project of the Ferrandina-Matera La Martella line becomes more and more concrete. After the approval of the definitive project by the Extraordinary Government Commissioner, Italian Railway Network (FS Italiane Group) has published in the Official Journal of the European Union the bando di gara for an amount of 311 million euros for the completion of the Trenitalia Ferrandina-Matera line up to the village of La Martella in Basilicata. An unfinished one which, thanks also to the Pnrr and the Region - Rfi program contract, should be completed by 2026.
Ferrandina–Matera railway: works stopped for over 20 years
The Ferrandina-Matera railway is an ordinary gauge railway line, not completed, which will connect Matera to the national railway network at the Ferrandina Scalo Matera station. Construction work on the section began in 1986, but remained unfinished. Currently the city of Matera can only be reached by rail from Bari via the narrow-gauge railway line of the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane.
In detail, the new line will connect the city of Matera to the national railway infrastructure through a electrified line of 20 kilometers on a single track. The Matera La Martella station will be served both by a direct connection with the Ferrandina station and by a connection to the north via the new link road Battipaglia Potenza Metaponto, in order to allow a capillary transport both towards the north and towards the south of the country.
The project will also make it possible – explains a note – to establish long-distance railway connections between Matera and the High Speed system and to enhance the local public transport offer in the area in terms of frequency and quality.
