President Mattarella designated him to replace Professor Paolo Grossi, who ceased his functions as Judge and President of the Constitutional Court on February 23, 2018.

Il professore Francesco Vigano, ordinary of Criminal Law at Bocconi University in Milan, was appointed by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, judge of the Constitutional Court. 

The head of state, with today's decree, pursuant to art. 135 of the Constitution Judge of the Constitutional Court, appointed Viganò in sostitution of Professor Paolo Grossi, who ceased to hold office as Judge and President of the Constitutional Court on 23 February 2018. This was announced in a note from the Quirinale.

The decree, continues the note from the Quirinale, was countersigned by the President of the Council of Ministers Paul Gentiloni. The Presidencies of the Senate of the Republic, the Chamber of Deputies and the Constitutional Court were notified of the appointment of the new Constitutional Judge.
