Die Welt: a bank tax for the Eurozone

The governments of the 17 European countries that adopt the euro are considering a bank tax, which would allow the private sector to be involved in the operation to rescue Greek finances. The news is reported by the German newspaper Die Welt, which cites other diplomatic sources inside the debate. The tax would also target banks that are not "directly engaged in Greece". The plan would also include the purchase of Greek bonds by the private banking sector.

The countries of the Eurozone will meet on Thursday in Brussels, when an extraordinary summit is scheduled to finalize a new aid plan. According to the German newspaper, however, there are many dissenting voices within the International Monetary Fund regarding the participation of the European institutions in the rescue of Greece. "Many in the IMF have had enough," says the newspaper, giving voice to those who believe it is very unlikely that Greece will be able to adopt the necessary economic measures to guarantee stability in the right time.
