This evening, once the consultations were concluded, the President of the Republic Napolitano entrusted life senator Mario Monti with the task of forming the new government, which he accepted with reservations. Monti said that he will try to dissolve the reserve and form a government as soon as possible but without renouncing an in-depth confrontation with the political forces that will have to support him in Parliament. In turn, Napolitano motivated with the financial emergency - 200 billion BOTs and BTPs to be renewed by April - the choice to avoid the early elections and to attempt the constitution of a Government with a strong technical profile which does not constitute any reversal with respect to the result of the last election.
Tomorrow the markets will thus be able to appreciate the Italian political novelty represented by the probable formation of a government with a technical profile but with a broad parliamentary base presided over by an independent personality highly esteemed in the international arena such as Mario Monti.
The president in charge denied any foundation to the rumors circulated on the composition of the government - which, however, should be very lean (only 12 ministers with a portfolio as envisaged by the Bassanini form) - but clarified the strategic and programmatic connotations arguing that the guiding stars of his action they will be financial recovery, economic growth, social equity and the redemption of Italy which from a point of weakness will have to go back to being a point of strength in Europe.
Monti's will be a caretaker government, whose members will largely come from the academic world. It will be able to count on the convinced support of the Democratic Party and the Third Pole, in the suffered support of the IDV, and in the conditional support of the PDL, while the League, also rejecting Berlusconi's appeals, confirmed its firm opposition but opened a small glimmer of which will evaluate what to do on the individual provisions of the new government.
Before conferring the assignment, the outgoing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi intervened with a video message, reiterating his support for the Monti attempt on condition that it be of limited duration and of a technical profile and maintained that the choice was the result of generosity and a sense of responsibility to avoid any financial speculation. Berlusconi considered the street demonstrations made up of boos and insults that yesterday welcomed his resignation sad and warned that his political commitment will not cease and that there is no alternative political majority to that centered on the PDL
