Constitution, examination of the reform is under way in the Senate Hall

Having filed the whirlwind of postponements, the examination of the package of constitutional reforms, which includes the revolution of the assembly of Palazzo Madama itself, got underway today in the Senate. After the interventions of the speakers Anna Finocchiaro (Pd) and Roberto Calderoli (Lega), the general discussion begins, which will continue tomorrow. Also tomorrow, at 13, the deadline for the presentation of amendments will expire. Voting on the proposed changes is expected to start on Wednesday.

The 5 Star Movement has already announced the battle: “The week of reforms begins. We find ourselves having to defend the Constitution, and we will do it tooth and nail,” said Barbara Lezzi, Grillina spokeswoman in the Senate.

“The long parliamentary battle of the 5 Star Movement in defense of the values of the Constitution has begun – continues on Facebook -. We will defend with our teeth what thousands of men and women have given us with their sacrifice and courage: the power of citizens to be able to vote directly for their representatives in each institution. The Renzi government together with Berlusconi, by making the Senate no longer elective, wants to take this sacrosanct and fundamental right out of the hands of the voters".

This morning, two preliminary rulings on the constitutionality of the bill were immediately presented: the first bears the signatures of the pentastellati senators, while the second comes from Sel and some former M5S. Both ask that the text of the constitutional reforms as developed by the Palazzo Madama commission not be approved.

Furthermore, the text signed by Sel-Misto reads that "the second-level election of the Senate is a violation of the Constitution, its revision is the responsibility of the Chambers and not of the government, the proposed reform of the bicameral system risks having distortive in the relationship between the powers of the State and does not lead to any savings but instead translates into a waste of resources".
