Shipyards, evidence of compromise: for Fincantieri the leadership of the civilian, for the French the military

In view of the summit between Gentiloni and Macron on 27 September, Italy and France are working to find an agreement that will give rise to a shipbuilding group active in both civil and military shipbuilding in which Fincantieri would have the leadership of cruise ships and the French Naval Group in military ships

Shipyards, evidence of compromise: for Fincantieri the leadership of the civilian, for the French the military

At Fincantieri the guide of civil shipbuilding e to the French Naval Group that of military shipbuilding but in one large international group destined to lead the world. This is the compromise scheme that Italy and France have already begun to work on after last Monday's lightning summit and in view of the summit between Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and President Emmanuel Macron on 27 September next.

The fact that in the Chamber the Minister of Economic Development, Carlo Calenda, flexes his muscles and says that Italy is ready to apply, where possible, the golden power on Telecom Italia to defend the national interest, it does not at all exclude that the two governments seek, together with the companies concerned, the way to an agreement, even if, as always, the devil is hiding in the details.

The novelty of the last few hours is that the corporate subjects in the field will no longer be just two, namely Fincantieri and Stx France dueling on the Saint Nazaire shipyards, but three with theNaval Group entered the scene, a leading French company in military shipbuilding, founded in 1631 by Cardinal Richelieu, which was already discussed at the Rome summit on Monday.

If an agreement is reached between Italy and France which gives rise to a large alliance in the shipbuilding industry, Fincantieri will see the leadership and guidance of the civil branch recognized while Naval Group, which has a turnover almost double that of Fincantieri in the military sector, would have the helm of military construction sites.

It is not excluded that in the future the military branch of the possible Italy-France shipbuilding alliance can be extended to the Germans of ThyssenKrupp giving rise to the first nucleus of the common European defense which would represent a big step forward not only on an industrial level but also in terms of relaunching the process of European integration.
