Bank of Italy: decisive hours, Visco on pole

The meeting of the Superior Council will precede that of the Council of Ministers which is expected on Friday, while today Visco will be in Frankfurt for the meeting of the board of the ECB.

We are at the final countdown for the appointment of the Governor of the Bank of Italy. Ignazio Visco, number one outgoing via Nazionale, remains the favourite. The Superior Council of the Bank of Italy, which must express an opinion on the name that was advanced by the Prime Minister in the letter sent today to Bank of Italy.

The meeting of the Superior Council will precede that of the Council of Ministers which is expected on Friday, while today Visco will be in Frankfurt for the meeting of the board of the ECB.

The choice, the government assures, will be inspired "exclusively by the criterion of safeguarding the institution's autonomy". This has led many observers to believe that, in the event that the option of a replacement at the top of the Bank of Italy prevails, the name of Salvatore Rossi, the current general manager, would be in the front row.
