Italian agri-food, record exports in 2022: 28,5 billion (+21%) especially in the non-EU area

The Made in Italy agri-food race shows no signs of slowing down: Italy is the sixth world exporter of food & beverage, but in terms of trends it ensures its supremacy among Europeans

In the third quarter of 2022, compared to the previous one, Istat estimates one export growth equal to 2,7%, +7,5% for imports. In September 2022, exports grew on an annual basis by 21,6% in monetary terms and by 2,1% in volume. The growth of exports in value was more sustained towards non-EU markets (+27,2%) than towards the EU area (+17,1%). Imports in value recorded a tendential increase of 40,4%, more intense for the non-EU area (+59%) than in the EU area (+25,2%), while in volume it remained substantially unchanged (- 0,5%).

On an annual basis, the markets that provided the largest contributions were: Use (+ 48,6%), France (+ 18,8%), Germany (+14,8%) and countries OPEC (+49,1%). The decline in exports to the Russia (-34,6%).

Foreign trade and import prices of industrial products

In the first nine months of 2022, according to theIstat, the tendential growth of exports (+21,1%) is due in particular to the increase in the sales of articles pharmaceuticals, chemical-medicines e botanists (+45,8%), base metals and products in metal, excluding machinery and plants (+20,2%), products refined petroleum products (+ 100,6%), substances e chemical products (+ 24,3%) and foodstuffs, drinks and tobacco (+ 18,6%).

Precisely in this regard, according to the data presented by Nomisma, Italy is the sixth world exporter of food and beverage products (42,3 billion euros in 2021, reaching 50 if we also include agricultural products) after the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Brazil. In terms of trends, however, it is the first European market both in the medium term (CAGR 2016-2021 of +6,2% against +3,8% in France and +2,9% in Germany) and in 2022. In the first 7 months of 2022, Italian exports have reached a new record: 28,5 billion, +21% compared to 2021 against the +15% and +16% achieved in the same period by our German and French cousins.

Italy leader in the export of pasta and tomato preserves

Thanks to the quality of the productions, Italy is the world leader in the export of pasta e canned tomatoes (where it has a market share of 29% and 44% respectively), while it is second in exports of wine (share of 24% for sparkling wines and 21% for still wines; France in first place) and extra-virgin olive oil (20%).

South Korea emerging market with the greatest potential

Among the emerging countries worthy of note are Israel, Saudi Arabia ed UAE in Middle East; Poland e Romania inEastern Europe; while for the China a recovery of the economy is expected as early as 2023. However, it is the South Korea the emerging market with the greatest potential, thanks to a thriving economy and double-digit annual growth rates of Made in Italy food exports.
