Terna and Legambiente together to support the smart islands project

Signed a Memorandum of Understanding to identify innovative and smart solutions for the environmental and social sustainability of electricity production systems in the smaller Italian islands. Planned the redevelopment of degraded areas for the purpose of producing electricity from renewable sources in full respect of the territory.

Terna and Legambiente together to support the smart islands project

A Memorandum of Understanding to promote all the necessary to spread and increase the culture of sustainability in the environmental, social and energy fields.

With this agreement, Terna and Legambiente are starting a collaboration to define solutions that favor the development of renewable sources in the smaller islands and undertake to support and strengthen sustainability at national and local level and to redevelop degraded areas of the country for the purpose of producing electricity from renewable source.

The Smart Islands project that Terna has already undertaken in various Italian islands was born, in fact, to support the modernization and efficiency of electricity systems in islands not connected to the national electricity grid thanks to the use of innovative solutions that integrate green sources , energy storage and urban mobility in respect of the territory, thus allowing their progressive and sustainable energy independence. As part of its activities and its Development Plan, Terna is strongly committed to climate change, sustainable development and support for the growth of green sources.

With the signing of this agreement, Legambiente and Terna begin a cooperation divided into two phases: initially they will identify the sites that best reflect the functional and landscape needs of the works to be carried out, also indicating the solutions capable of accommodating the needs of the involved and aggregate more consensus; the second phase of the collaboration will consist of discussions with local communities and institutions in order to evaluate the authorization process necessary to carry out the identified works and their feasibility. The study activities will immediately focus on the islands of Giannutri and Giglio as well as on the island of Pantelleria, for which the agreement provides for the launch of feasibility solutions also concerning the redevelopment of landfill areas in order to verify the implementation of renewable plants. The agreement will then be progressively extended also to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions on other non-interconnected Italian islands with which Terna has been pursuing further initiatives and agreements for some time.
Innovation and technology, therefore, at the service of sustainability which today represents a key element of Terna's investment plan and corporate growth strategy. A path
virtuous that the national TSO has undertaken with the aim of creating a cutting-edge electricity system, as it is more efficient, smart, less polluting and more sustainable, also in terms of lower costs for the system for the benefit of stakeholders and citizens.

This agreement, commented Luigi Michi of Terna, is consistent with Terna's project to make, not only the islands of Giannutri, Giglio and the island of Pantelleria, but also the other non-interconnected Italian islands real Smart Islands, thanks to interventions designed to combine electrical needs with environmental ones. Terna, which makes Sustainability a strategic lever, also together with Legambiente, will be able to make the vast experience and solid know-how it has gained in the creation of innovative systems available to the smaller islands, at the service of territories with great landscape and great tourist interest.

In the islands, declared Stefano Ciafani of Legambiente, an emblematic challenge is being played out for environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change, the development of renewable sources and for the production of clean energy. We are convinced that in the smaller Italian islands there are, in fact, the conditions to bring about a positive change to the benefit of the environment and citizens, quality and employment with positive effects on tourist attraction. For this reason we have signed an agreement with Terna to build together a path that favors the development of clean sources in the smaller Italian islands, through innovative solutions that are attentive to integration into the environment and landscape.
