LSE throws in the towel on the Toronto Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange, which controls the Milan Stock Exchange, withdrew its offer for the merger with the Canadian Tmx, just on the eve of the meeting which today would have had to choose between the LSE option and the offer of a pool of Canadian banks.

It's a real twist: the London Stock Exchange, which controls the Italian Stock Exchange, has withdrawn its offer for the merger with Tmx, the Canadian Toronto Montreal Stock Exchange.

And to think that LSE shares had grown by 15% since mid-May on the wave of interest from the Nasdaq. Xavier Rolet, French CEO of LSE, explained the decision to withdraw the offer on the eve of the meeting of the Canadian Stock Exchange, which today would have had to choose between an alliance with London and the offer of a pool of Canadian banks: "We could have counted on the majority of votes, but not on the two-thirds necessary for the merger."
