A spokesman for Barroso says that "at the moment there is no direct contact between the president of the European Commission and the Argentine authorities, but the Commission, through the EU delegation in Argentina, has expressed its concerns" about what is unfolding , concerns also expressed "to some Mercosur member countries", with which the EU Commission "is discussing".
The community body therefore hopes for "a solution that does not alter economic relations between the EU and Argentina, recalling in any case that the Lisbon Treaty has given the EU Commission "tools to put pressure" on the governments of non-EU countries and "competences in the matter of investment abroad".
