There has never been so much in Italy gas. “We are in a much better situation than last year: we have exceeded 82%, so we're definitely going to achieve 95% fill. This represents an element of tranquility in view of the coming winter because this means having at least 12 billion cubic meters to satisfy the winter demand. “What seemed like a very difficult target to achieve last year, namely the 95% fill, is within reach this year and we are achieving it two months early”. Snam's CEO said so, Stefano Venier, on the sidelines of the first annual conference of Confindustria Energy "The sustainability of the energy transition: balance between economic growth and social well-being" which was attended by the major Italian companies in the energy sector who reaffirmed the importance of a pragmatic and concrete approach for a sustainable energy transition from an environmental, economic and social point of view.
During the conference, Snam's CEO also announced the activation of the regasification ship in Piombino next winter. A move that marks an important step forward for gas distribution in the country.
Energy transition, over 1 million jobs involved
They are over 1 million jobs involved in the energy transition process undertaken by our country. A challenge which, in order to achieve the European objectives, must aim at safeguarding employment and ensuring the strong competitiveness of businesses. This is what emerged from the Confindustria Energia conference, organized on the occasion of the handover from Joseph Ricci to the new president Guido Brusco. “Principles such as those of technological neutrality, the importance of research and development, the evaluation of technologies according to the entire life cycle, the need for infrastructure investments, a stable regulatory context, are the main assumptions that must always be considered for a just to sustainable energy transition. There cannot be a radical change in the energy model if a way is not found to ensure the social stability of the system”, said Ricci. “The energy transition must be seen as an opportunity for growth for our country and for the evolution and adaptation of its infrastructures without ideological preclusions – added Brusco -. It will be essential to continue to favor and strengthen constructive industrial relations and to work together to achieve common objectives and with the shared idea that the social issue is a fundamental requirement for the success of the transition".
Bonomi: "We need 1.100 billion investments for decarbonisation"
The president of Confindustria, Carlo Bonomi, has placed emphasis on investment. “We are facing an epochal paradigm shift and the country cannot jump without a parachute. Investments of 1.100 billion euros will be needed to achieve the decarbonisation objectives in Italy between now and 2030. This is an investment flow of 140 billion euros a year, which requires a serious commitment from all operators in the field” .
Descalzi: "The key is decarbonisation"
According to Eni's CEO, Claudio Descalzi, “we need technological diversification. Biofuels, carbon capture, technologies don't exist yet. Everything has to be done. The transition must absolutely be faced as a priority but in addition to working for the near future we must work for the present, because without energy security there are no fundamental activities such as health care, agriculture, etc. After all, we pay 5 times the price of what the United States pays. We cannot immediately change all the infrastructure because we have limited resources, which is why decarbonisation is needed. That is the key, but if we criminalize it, there is no longer a confrontation but an argument, an opposition”.
Scaroni: "We need gigantic investments in renewables"
For the new president of Enel, Paul Scaroni, “We need gigantic investments in renewables, as well as significantly increasing the distribution and transport networks. We cannot think that everything can come from public finance, we have to discuss financing". On the price of energy in relation to today's gas price, Scaroni said he was optimistic. “When our world starts investing, prices go down. So I think we will be able to replicate this drop in prices, it is certainly an uphill journey but one that we absolutely have to do".
