FS, PNRR tender: on the Palermo-Catania-Messina line awarded by RFI for works worth 616 million

Il FS Group awarded another contract in Sicily for 616 million euros. The tender announced by RFI – company head of the Infrastructure Pole of FS Italiane – concerns the Nuova Enna-Dittaino section of the Palermo-Catania-Messina. The interventions will be carried out by the Temporary Grouping of Companies which sees Webuild Italia as leader and Impresa Pizzarotti as principal.

The work will also be financed with the funds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). "The award of this tender completes the European railway objectives of the year in the PNRR and comes just a few weeks after the one for the works, on the same line, of the Dittaino-Catenanuova section, worth over 588 million euros", explains a note from the Group.

The Nuova Enna-Dittaino section: reductions in travel times

In detail, the interventions between New Enna and Dittaino they consist in the construction of three tunnels, for a total length of 8,5 kilometres, and a one kilometer long viaduct. Furthermore, the new station of Enna Nuova will be built and that of Dittaino will be renovated.

At the end of the works along the whole axis it will be possible to cover the distance between Palermo and Catania in less than two hours. Travel time reductions progressives are in any case already foreseen in advance, thanks to the phased activation of the new stretches of line. Furthermore, the planned interventions will lead to speeding up connections and increasing the standards of regularity and punctuality of the trains.
