Those who will have to go home to vote under the political elections on March 4th will be able to count on tariff concessions which will make it possible to purchase tickets for trains, planes and ships, or to pay the motorway toll, taking advantage of a discount on the price of the tickets.
He established it circular n.13 / 2018 of the Central Directorate of the Electoral Services which also indicates time limits for requesting subsidies and the methods for obtaining them.
The concessions do not apply only to political elections but also to regional elections which will always be held on March 4 in Lombardy and Lazio.
Elections 4 March: discounts on trains, Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord
Trenitalia provides concessions “Travel for voters”. In detail, residents of Italy can obtain, "exclusively for round trips in 2nd class for all trains of the national service and for the Standard level of Frecciarossa, the following reductions: 70% of the Base price for medium- national long distance (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and IntercityNotte) and couchette service; 60% reduction on tickets for Regional trains”.
However, there are time limits that must be respected. According to the instructions provided by Trenitalia, "the outward journey can be made from the tenth day before the voting day (this included) and the return journey up until midnight on the tenth day following the voting day (the latter excluded)" .
For Italo, travelers can instead count on an 60% discount on every ticket purchased from 12 January to 04 March in Flex or Economy fare, for travel from 23 February to 13 March.
In both cases, you will need to show your electoral document on board the train e the electoral card with the stamp of the successful vote. For the outward journey, a substitute declaration will also suffice.

Elections March 4: discounts on planes
The travel concessions will be valid only if you choose Alitalia. Planned a maximum discount of 40 euros on the base price of a return ticket, excluding taxes and surcharges, for a domestic flight. The ticket must be purchased by March 4th to leave between February 24th and March 4th and return between March 4th and 10th.
“At the time of check-in and boarding the passenger – Alitalia informs us – will simply be asked to show his electoral card. If the elector does not have one for the outward journey, it will be necessary to sign a substitutive declaration to be presented to the airport staff. Upon return, the passenger must show their electoral card duly stamped and dated by the Electoral Section, thus demonstrating that the vote has taken place".
Elections 4 March: discounts for those traveling by sea
Tirrenia – Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione which makes connections with Sardinia, Sicily and the Tremiti Islands provides for a 60% reduction on the ordinary rate. Authorized ticket offices will always apply the relative resident rate to those who "are entitled to the reduced rate as residents, unless the electoral rate" is more advantageous.
The discount will be valid in first and second class and will be valid for 20 days. The facilitation “is granted upon presentation of electoral documentation and an identification document. On the return journey, the electoral card must be shown, bearing the stamp of the section electoral office”.
The same rules will be valid for the Company Charon & Tourist Isole Minori (which ensures the scheduled public service between Sicily and its smaller islands).
Elections March 4: discounts on motorways
The concessions do not concern those who reside in Italy, but far from the Municipality in which they vote. Free toll instead for residents abroad with exhibition of electoral documentation. For the outward journey, the concessions will be valid from 22pm on the fifth day before 4 March and, for the return journey, until 22pm on the fifth day following the closing of the voting operations.
