Here comes the latest ecological Sunday in the Capital: Sunday 26 March 2023 it will be the fifth scheduled appointment, at least for the season, with the blocking of the most polluting cars a Roma within the perimeter of the Green band. As envisaged, therefore, by national and regional regulations, traffic block days are essential to contain the levels of pollution in the city by encouraging residents to use forms of sustainable mobility. Here are all the details.

Ecological Sunday 26 March: times

That of Sunday 26 March 2023 will therefore be the last ecological Sunday foreseen by the calendar programmed by the Capitoline Council. Starting from 7.30 am to 12.30 pm e from 16.30 am to 20.30 pm, circulation will be limited to all motor vehicles in the area of ​​the Rome territory delimited by the perimeter coinciding with that of the new Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), the so-called "Green Belt" (which now extends almost to the Raccordo Anulare). The provision will also concern cars provided with a permit to access and drive in the ZTL. Obviously, the ban in question also remains valid for four-stroke mopeds and motorcycles with homologation from Euro 0 to Euro 3 and for two-wheel and four-stroke mopeds up to Euro 2.

Ecological Sunday, who can circulate?

As established by the official provision, on the occasion of ecological Sundays they will be able to circular only:

  • Euro 6 petrol car
  • Electric, hybrid, LPG, CNG, Bi-Fuel cars (petrol + LPG or CNG, with at least Euro 3 engines and in any case running on LPG or CNG)
  • Vehicles with a disabled badge. 
  • 2-wheeled mopeds with 4-stroke Euro 2 and later engines
  • 4-stroke motorcycles Euro 3 and later

All other vehicle categories will not be able to circulate in the Green Belt.

The new Green Band and permanent bans for the most polluting cars

The stop will affect all diesel-powered categories without any exclusion. But it is important to remember that they started on November 15th new restrictions to the circulation in ZTL Green Band, whose perimeter has also been enlarged. Until recently, the blockade of polluting cars in Rome was organized in two concentric areas, Fascia Verde and Anello Ferroviario, each with different rules and prohibitions. The City Council of Rome recently approved a new resolution which establishes the presence of a single new Green Band and indicates new permanent, programmed or emergency limitations.

In essence, the railway ring has been incorporated into the new ZTL Fascia Verde, with stricter rules for different vehicle categories.

Ecological Sunday 26 March 2023: derogations and exemptions

As usual they are provided derogations ed exemptionsas regards the means:

  • For use by doctors, paramedics and veterinarians on home visits;
  • Employed for the transport of people undergoing medical treatments that cannot be postponed;
  • Employed for the transport of people subject to security measures;
  • Used for the transport of perishable goods, the transport of medicines, the transport of valuables and the distribution of periodicals;
  • Used for work in the Sunday markets;
  • Employed by information operators in service and to subjects operating in the cinematographic and audiovisual field for the carrying out of cinematographic, audiovisual and photographic shootings;
  • Employed for participation in religious ceremonies scheduled prior to the municipal ordinance;
  • In obligatory compliance with sentences and decrees of the civil and criminal court;
  • Used for initiatives promoted or sponsored by Roma Capitale and CONI affiliated federations.

Traffic block in Rome: how much is the fine?

Traffic at times and in areas where traffic restrictions are imposed on ecological Sundays will result in a fine by 163 658 in euros and, in case of recurrence in the following two years, it can lead to suspension of the driving license driving from 15 to 30 days.

Trenitalia launches Eco-Ticket on the occasion of ecological Sunday

All passengers in possession of a regional ticket with destination Rome, valid for Sunday 26 March, will be able to travel free for the whole day on all the regional ones circulating in the area of ​​the capital's railway ring.
