Streaming gives a breath of fresh air to Italian discography. After 11 consecutive years of contraction, in 2013 the Italian music market returned to growth, recording a turnover of 117,7 million euros, against 115,9 in 2012.
From the data that Deloitte collected for the Italian Music Industry Federation (Fimi), it emerges that the audio streaming sector was above all driving the market, capable of achieving a boom of +182%.
Led by services such as Spotify, Cubomusica and Deezer, this sector recorded a turnover of over seven million euros, against 2,5 in 2012, coming to represent 18% of the digital segment, up from 8% the previous year. On the other hand, video streaming slows down for the first time (-2%).
As for downloads (62% of the digital market), the growth between singles and albums was 6%. In all, over 25 million songs are available to Italian consumers for download or streaming.
Outside the digital domain, the growth of vinyl albums continues, which – after last year's resurgence – recorded a further 2013% growth in 6.
Finally, in terms of content, the Italian repertoire grew by 9%, with nine artists out of ten in the 2013 annual Top of the Music ranking. Classical music took off, growing by 86%, reaching 11% of the music sales in Italy.
