The Bulgarian government resigned today after protests broke out across the country against high electricity prices, swelling the ranks of European executives who fell due to austerity.
Prime Minister Boiko Borisov has tried to appease the protests by sacking the finance minister, ensuring that he will reduce energy prices and hit foreign companies in a series of measures that have not served to mitigate the discontent that also resulted in protests yesterday.
Many Bulgarians are unhappy with the high energy prices, sector monopolies, poor quality of life and corruption gripping the poorest country in the European Union. 25 people were taken to hospital last night after clashes erupted between protesters and police.
"I will not be part of a government in which the police beat people," Borisov said today announcing his resignation. The premier did not say whether the parliamentary elections scheduled for July will be brought forward.
