Record for apps: in December 2012, the number of downloads of application programs by customers of various products in the Apple universe reached 40 billion, from iPhones to iPads. This was reported by the Californian company itself, specifying that only in 2012 applications downloaded were 20 billion worldwide. In particular, it was the last month, that of December, that recorded a real record: over two billion downloads during the month.
Applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users currently number more than 775 worldwide. "It's been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet Software and Services. "Developers have earned over seven billion dollars with the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."
Among the most downloaded applications there is certainly "Temple Run", a mobile game from the husband-and-wife company Imangi Studios, which saw over 75 million downloads in 2012. “The success of our game Temple Run in 2012 was nothing less than sensational,” said Keith Shepherd , co-founder of Imangi Studios. And “we were just trying to create a fun and easy to use game – he added – but once on the App Store, our creation took flight”.
Also of note are Backflip Studios and Supercell, two emerging game developers who have collectively earned over $100 million on freemium games DragonVale and Clash of Clans, and emerging services including Uber, Flipboard, HotelTonight and AirBnB, not forgetting the game of the moment: Ruzzle.
