Inflation accelerated in the United States in May. Consumer prices rose 0,4% compared to the previous month, marking the largest increase since February 2013. The figure released by the Commerce Department exceeded analysts' expectations, who had expected a slowdown to 0,2% after April's 0,3%.

Excluding volatile components such as energy and food, the increase was 0,3%. On an annual basis, consumer prices rose 2,1% in May, the highest level since October 2012, while the core figure increased by 2%. In April, consumer prices had risen 1,6% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Wall Street opened negative in the Italian afternoon.
