Lo State holds a indirect control about a third of the Italian Stock Exchange through his 13 participated strategic companies, which operate in the energy, finance, infrastructure and defense sectors.

As of 1 December 2023, public investments in Piazza Affari reached one capitalization of 224,2 billion euros, corresponding to 30,28% of the entire market value of the Italian Stock Exchange, which amounts to 740,4 billion euros. The leaders are Enel and Eni.

These are some of the data taken from the fifth edition of the "Report on the financial statements of state-owned companies 2017-2022" of the CoMar Study Center.

The State, also considering CDP, holds a majority stake exceeding 50% in four companies: Enav (53,3%), Fincantieri (71,3%), Poste Italiane (64,7%) and Raiway (65%). The smaller shareholdings are recorded in Enel (23,6%), STMicroelectronics (28,2%), Terna (29,8%), Eni (32,3%), Leonardo (30,2%) and Snam (31,3, XNUMX%).

State-owned companies: capitalization growing by 2023% in 16,8

In the period between 1 January and 1 December 2023, capitalization of the 13 state-owned companies is increased by 16,8%, equivalent to 32,6 billion of Euro. A growth, however, lower than the 18,3% recorded for the overall value of the Stock Exchange.

I greater percentage increases they occurred in Leonardo (+77,3%), Banca MPS (+53,1%), Saipem (+32,8%) and Enel (+28,7%). Less positive results, however, for Enav (-17,6%), Raiway (-9,2%) and Italgas (-1,8%).

The total value of state shares is 69 billion euros

As of December 1, 2023, calculating the share held by the state in each of the thirteen listed subsidiaries and the relative capitalisation, the total value of the shares publicly owned amounts to 69 billion euro.
