Milan, today at Palazzo Morando we are talking about the air-raid shelters in Milan

They called them "shelters" because the name sounded more reassuring, but most of them were simple cellars propped up. The first large air-raid shelter was built in 1931 in the basement of the Central Station and in the following years there will be hundreds, also built under the power plants of the Aqueduct. On 5 October 1940, the Municipality of Milan printed a file containing 129 files relating to 135 public air-raid shelters, but what of all this remains today in the Milanese underground?

For the occasion, Saturday 12 December, the exhibition will remain open until 19.30 (last admission, 18.30).

The “Milan, city of water” exhibition, curated by Stefano Galli, organized by the Spirale d'Idee Association, promoted by the Municipality of Milan | Cultura, Servizio Musei Storici, until 14 February 2016 at Palazzo Morando, presents 150 period images from public and private archives, to testify to the very rich presence of water in the city since its foundation, as a key element around which the physiognomy of the city, its prosperity and its historical fortune have been built.
