"Changing the European treaty must not be considered a taboo“, the German chancellor immediately said. ”Germany supports the European Union and wants a stronger Union – continued la Merkel -. The Commission must speak with clear and strong language to the states” and ”if a change of the treaty will be needed to ensure the sustainability of public finances then changing the treaty must not be considered a taboo”.

"We want Europe to be a success story", added Merkel, who then, when asked about Germany's active role in the banking and Greece issue: "Germany is ready to recapitalize the banks, but the EU decision must be taken quickly. Greece must stay in the eurozone, and we will do whatever it takes to help it get back on the path to growth."

Barroso for his part, he specified that any change to the treaty "will be done to have greater integration if the current mechanisms show that there is not enough".

”It is not a way to postpone decisions – continued the President of the Commission – some must be adopted now but we will probably also need to change the treaty in the future".
