Matera is the Italian city designated to fill the coveted role of European Capital of Culture for 2019. The announcement was made by Minister Dario Franceschini at the Roman College after the vote of the members of the jury, chaired by Steve Green. The Lucan capital received 7 preferences out of 13.
In Matera, which beat the competition from Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia-Assisi, Siena and Ravenna, the celebrations have already begun, with great enthusiasm for the city. For the mayor Salvatore Adduce, it is "a sign of civilization and redemption, which reaches Europe from Matera and the South".
