Marchi, the banker from the Northeast who thinks big: finance, airports, publishing and now the bet on MPS

After graduating in economics at Bocconi in the late 70s, Enrico Marchi, liberal banker and now President of Finint Bank, which some call “The Northeast Doghouse“, received several job offers from the world of finance, but he dropped them all and preferred to return home to Veneto, in his Conegliano. “My roots are here and since then I have always thought – he said in an interview given five years ago to FIRSTonline – about how to do something useful for the Northeast, the land that I love infinitely”. Since then, a lot of water has passed under the bridge and Marchi has built the Finint (International Financial Group) which controls that little gem of Finint Bank financial boutique specializing in structured finance, corporate finance, investment banking and asset management with a leading role in the mini-bond market. Then he began to think about the infrastructure of the Veneto region and built the Save, holding company of a group of airports including Venice, Treviso, Verona, Brescia, Charleroi, of which Marchi is President. Last year he entered the publishing market to give "a voice to the Northeast" and took over, together with twenty entrepreneurs from Veneto and Friuli, the 6 newspapers in the area put up for sale by Cheetah constituting the Northeast Multimedia (Nem). Now on his table is the bet of the Monte dei Paschi (Mps), of which – together with a group of Italian entrepreneurs – he is considering acquiring a share of between 7,5% and 11,5% from the Treasury and forming a core of stable shareholders to give continuity to the troubled Sienese bank that has now recovered. Marchi does not have infinite financial resources but he has a treasure that others do not have: he is an incessant volcano of ideas and thinks big with the aim of giving a prominent role to the Northeast and making it count on the national scene, outside of parochialism and political temptations. If only there were many Marchis.
