The acquittal of Marco Tronchetti Provera in the trial in which he was accused of defamation by Carlo De Benedetti as publisher of the Repubblica – L'Espresso group is final. In fact, the terms available to De Benedetti's defense have expired to ask the Milan Court of Appeal to overturn the verdict pronounced on 21 September 2015 by the judge of the fourth section of the Tribunal Monica Amicone.
In October 2013, the president of Pirelli and the engineer had been the protagonists of a heated exchange on their respective entrepreneurial skills, which had touched upon events such as the bankruptcy of Banco Ambrosiano, Tangentopoli and the history of companies such as Fiat and Olivetti. A clash that ended up on the pages of national newspapers and landed in court, after the lawsuit presented by the publisher of the L'Espresso Group.
Tronchetti Provera had been acquitted with the formula because the fact does not constitute a crime. In particular, Tronchetti ended up on trial for having replied to a radio interview with Carlo De Benedetti stating, through statements made to Ansa, that the Engineer "has been much discussed for certain Olivetti financial statements, for the scandal linked to the equipment at the Italian Post Office, who was removed from Fiat, involved in the bankruptcy of Banco Ambrosiano, which ended up in the Tangentopoli affair".
