Artificial intelligence: Amazon completes $4 billion investment in OpenAI rival Antrophic

Amazon he completed his investment in Anthropic, a startup focused on generative artificial intelligence, pouring in $2,6 billion. The e-commerce giant has bet on the company founded by the Italian-American brothers Dario and Daniela Amodei, committing to invest four billion in total of dollars. The first payment of 1,25 billion was made in September 2023, while the remaining portion was delivered yesterday by Jeff Bezos' giant. Amazon's goal is to help Anthropic lead the industry by surpassing the models offered by OpenAI (Gpt) and Google (Gemini).

Amazon enters Anthrophic

In exchange for the investment, Amazon receives a minority stake in Anthropic and the possibility of offering the start-up's models through Bedrock, a service from Amazon Web Services that allows developers to integrate AI capabilities into their applications. Anthropic, on the other hand, will use Amazon's specialized Trainium and Inferentia processors to train its artificial intelligence models. Recently, Anthropic and Amazon presented Claudia 3, a new and advanced family of third-generation AI models. Claude 3 features enhanced intelligence, near-human responsiveness, improved maneuverability and precision, along with new vision capabilities. Claude 3 Opus, the smartest model in the series, has established a new standard outperforming other current models, including OpenAI's Gpt-4, in the areas of reasoning, mathematics and coding according to industry benchmarks.

Anthropic, OpenAI's main rival

Anthropic, based in San Francisco, is considered the OpenAI's main rival. Its generative artificial intelligence system, Claude, is seen as more powerful and energy efficient than ChatGPT by many experts. The company has attracted high-profile investors such as Google, Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and Amazon, pushing its valuation above $18 billion.

Amazon and Google, both looking for alternatives to ChatGpt, have invested in Anthropic, as OpenAI has an exclusive relationship with Microsoft. Despite the e-commerce giant's $4 billion investment, in fact, Anthropic intends maintain relationships with other customers, including Google, which provided $2 billion in funding. The Californian startup will continue to use both Amazon and Google's clouds to run and train its artificial intelligence models.

“We have a remarkable history with Anthropic. Their visionary work with generative AI, most recently the introduction of its latest generation Claude 3 model family, combined with Amazon's world-class infrastructure like AWS Trainium and managed services like Amazon Bedrock, unlocks further exciting opportunities for customers to innovate quickly, safely and responsibly with generative AI. Generative AI is poised to be the most transformative technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further enhance our customers' experiences and we can't wait to see what comes next,” said Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of Data and AI at aws.
