Innovation Day Leonardo: 11 teams awarded. Digitization and sustainability are the pillars of the new technological cycle

Implement a sustainable transformation of new technology cycles. It is the goal of Leonardo which continues to push the investments in research and development: in 2021 they amounted to 1,8 billion euros, an increase compared to the 1,6 billion in 2020. And it is in this context, oriented towards innovation and sustainability, that theInnovation Day, an event dedicated to the talent born in the aerospace, defense and security company, and which is also reflected in the 15% increase in patents filed in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Innovation day: Leonardo rewards 11 teams on over 800 projects

During the event, in the presence of CEO Alessandro Profumo, the awards ceremony was held 11 winning teams of the Innovation Award against 831 projects presented, with an overall participation of 2.500 company employees. Over the years, the initiative, now in its 16th edition, has seen the involvement of 35 employees with 11 projects presented.

Among the winning projects, that of Origami, an innovative design of the helicopter tailplane: aerodynamic tips that improve performance at both high and low speed, minimizing drawbacks and significantly increasing its stability. It is designed as a retrofit kit intended to replace conventional tips and, at the same time, preserve the main body of the tailplane. A key point of the project is the applicability to different helicopters avoiding a complete redesign of the tailplane.

The project also has a strong impact, highlights the company Radar Processor on Chip which consists in the creation of a radar chain inside a single chip – with an important saving in the use of components – capable of offering an important competitive advantage. The solution – intended for all applications that require low-cost, easily installable and transportable sensors – has a direct impact in terms of sustainability, thanks to the reduction in the power of electromagnetic signal emissions and the overall dimensions, significantly reduced compared to a radar traditional.
