Gentiloni challenges the grillini: "The insults and the denial of science will not win"

Speaking for the first time as Prime Minister at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Paolo Gentiloni highlighted the recovery of the economy and employment, the return of confidence and the results achieved so far by the Government on migrants and on economic policy: "We have what it takes to seize the opportunities that present themselves”.

Gentiloni challenges the grillini: "The insults and the denial of science will not win"

"I'm not used to promising miracles and as prime minister I limited myself to pursuing the reforms and giving the country greater peace of mind". So the premier Paolo Gentiloni, guest at the Ambrosetti workshop in Cernobbio, proudly claimed the results of his government, emphasizing the recovery of the economy and the return of confidence in a context of political unpredictability across the continent which, however, "does not make Italy the black sheep of stability". In particular, Gentiloni underlined that most of the 6 largest European economies, without giving examples, also have problems of political stability".

The Prime Minister strongly supported the results obtained on an economic and social level, even though they were not yet fully satisfactory: "In this favorable context, even if not without risks, Italy is arriving leaving behind the most acute crisis that we had in the postwar period. We can finally say that we have left the most difficult post-war period behind us".

Among the results achieved Gentiloni cited: the return of growth, thanks above all to exports, to manufacturing, but also to the exploits of services and tourism; the recovery of the market work, due to the reforms made in recent years, which, even if "scandalously insufficient" made it possible to reach the record of 23 million employed, recovering over 900 jobs compared to the 99 million lost during the toughest years of the crisis; the recovery of balance in public accounts, without, however, penalizing growth, "with a primary surplus that has no equal in advanced countries".

Gentiloni also underlined with satisfaction the solution to the banking crises (Mps and Veneto banks) and highlighted the turning point, also supported by the major European partners, on the migratory flows which have considerably reduced in recent months. “Now we need a good budget law that does no damage and accompanies growth”. During his speech, the premier, referring to the 5 Star Movement which makes its debut on Sunday in Cernobbio with the presence of the probable candidate for premier Luigi Di Maio, also expressed all his confidence in the fact that “the politics of insulting and denying science will not win”.

Finally, Gentiloni highlighted the reopening of the hope of relaunching Europe that is emerging after Macron's victory in France, one year after the shock of Brexit, and reiterated that Europe will be the crucial watershed of the next electoral campaign, but that Italy has all the credentials to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves.
