Production of Toyota, Honda and Nissan collapses due to the earthquake

Japan's auto industry in trouble due to earthquake. Toyota, the number one in the industry, announced today that it suffered a 78,4% year-on-year drop in April production to 53.823 units, while Honda and Nissan, Japan's second and third largest automakers respectively; recorded declines of 81% (18.168 units) and 48,7% (44.193) respectively. The earthquake and consequent tsunami of last March 11, which hit north-eastern Japan, caused serious damage, still not completely eliminated, to the electricity grid and above all to the parts supply chains. Toyota, precisely because of the shortage of components, had to suspend activities in its plants all over the world, from Europe to the United States, via China.
