In 2021, the Blue economy growing again: +9,3% compared to 2020, which brings the added value generated by companies in the sector to almost 56 billion euros, but is struggling to recover pre-Covid levels. There are a total of 225 entrepreneurial activities in the sea economy, 3,7% of the total companies, just under two thirds are in tourism. Lazio is at the top for the number of companies in the Sea system (15,5%) with Roma which leads the provincial ranking with almost 30 companies in the sector (13%).

This is what emerges from an analysis of the Tagliacarne Study Center on the X Report on the Economy of the Sea which he produced for the Frosinone Latina Chamber of Commerce, Informare and Unioncamere.

“After the drastic drop in 2020 which had recorded losses of 8 billion euros, the Blue Economy sector reversed the trend last year. It has produced 56 billion euros but has activated a total of 156,7 billion euros across the entire supply chain, direct and indirect, thanks to its multiplicative capacity", said the general manager of the Tagliacarne Study Center, Gaetano Fausto Esposito, adding that "the good performance of the tourism and logistics sector, two very important components for the economy of the sea, lead us to believe that even in 2022 there will be very encouraging results that will lead the sector to exceed, already this year, the 2019 values.”

Blue economy: Rome in the lead, followed by Naples and Venice

More particularly in sea tourism, i accommodation services e Catering make up the lion's share with 107 businesses which, together with sporting and recreational activities (33.684 companies) represent 62,4% of blue entrepreneurship. Follows the fish supply chain (33.601), with a weight of 15%, closely followed by shipbuilding 13% (28.489).

The territorial distribution of blue companies reflects, according to the study, the connection of the territories with the marine element. In absolute terms, 47,9% of the businesses in the sea economy, i.e. almost half of the national total, are located in the Noon (107.568 businesses), another 26,2% al Centro (58.755), while the share of the North East coast and 11,2% the share of northwest.

Going into more detail, the accommodation and catering services sector weighs more in the Center 52,8% and in the South 49,9%. While the fish supply chain shows above-average values ​​in the North-East (23,9%) and in the South (15,8%).

At the regional level Lazio (15,5%), Campania (14%) and Sicilia (12,3%) concentrate more than 40% of the sea businesses.

In the provincial ranking if Rome is in the lead with 29.728 blue entrepreneurial realities, Napoli follows closely with more than 22 thousand companies and, with a certain detachment, Venezia it ranks third with 9.526 businesses.
