Bail-in, joint accounts: guarantee threshold of 100 thousand euros applies to each depositor

In the limit of 100 thousand euros for the guarantee on current accounts, the total amount of the deposited amount is not counted: the law provides that the depositor's share of the joint account is taken into consideration, considered equal between the joint account holders - But be careful when opening other accounts in the same bank...

Bail-in, joint accounts: guarantee threshold of 100 thousand euros applies to each depositor

Anyone who has a joint current account can breathe a sigh of relief: they will not be penalized by the bail-in, the new banking crisis resolution mechanism with the contribution of shareholders, bondholders and depositors in the event of bank failure. The limit of 100 thousand euros for the guarantee on deposits, in fact, does not apply to a single current account, but to each depositor. For example, if two spouses have a joint account with a deposit of 150 euros, the sum will be entirely safe, because it will be understood as divided 50% between the two joint account holders (75 euros each), each of whom will therefore be able to enjoy the warranty.

"The limit is always 100 euros for each depositor - reads a response from Bank of Italy to a question from Plus24 - within the limit, the share of the depositor on the joint account is counted which, according to civil law, is assumed to be equal between the joint account holders".

On the other hand, precisely because it is necessary to take into consideration the depositor and not the deposit, any other current accounts opened in the same bank are also included in the calculation. Therefore, if, for example, one of the two spouses mentioned above had another deposit in the same institution (in this case made out to him only) of 50 thousand euros, then the guarantee threshold would be exceeded, because the depositor's share would be higher overall to 100 thousand euros (75 thousand + 50 thousand = 125 thousand).

But for the sum of the deposits to be taken into consideration, we repeat, these must be held in the same bank: if you have several current accounts in several banks, the limit of 100 thousand euros applies to each of them.
