Company Description

American Express is an American diversified company engaged in travel and financial services. The company is a leader in the global payments industry. It operates through a network capable of handling millions of commercial transactions every day around the world. American Express is the fourth largest general purpose card network on a global basis based on purchase volume, behind China UnionPay, Visa e MasterCard. It is among the best known brands in the world and according to the FortuneMagazine among the best companies recognized as Best Companies to work for (9th place). As of 2020 it has 63.700 employees.

The headquarters are in New York.

The activities range in various sectors such as debit and credit cards, Travelers Cheques, Travel, Financial and Investment Services, Wealth Management and Insurance.
Revenues come mainly from the sale of means of payment to consumers (43,4%) followed by the sale of means of payment to small and large businesses (37%) and from the management of partner networks (19,6%).

It has been present in Italy since the early twentieth century. It has an office in Rome where there is the operations center and the general management while the commercial headquarters are in Milan.

American Express is publicly traded on the NYSE. It is one of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

American Express was founded in 1850 in Buffalo by Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield as a cash-in-transit company.

In 2012 he signed an agreement with Twitter for payments via the social network. Bluebird, a prepaid debit card, born from the agreement between American Express and Walmart is launched.

The ownership is 50% with a group of investors led by Certares, a company with experience in the tourism sector.
