The 2023 Development Plan of the national electricity grid provides for a commitment of 1,3 billion euros with Terna in Lombardy over the next 10 years. The main innovation that has emerged is the Hypergrid network, which will exploit direct current energy transmission technologies (HVDC, High Voltage Direct Current) to achieve the objectives of energy transition and security. A new HVDC electric backbone of over 400 km is also planned between Milan and Montalto (Viterbo), functional to the integration of renewable capacity.
Terna: new infrastructures for the development of the Lombardy electricity grid
The project, explains a note, includes a marine stretch from Montalto in Avenza (Massa Carrara), and the modernization with reconversion to 500 kV direct current of existing overhead lines from the area of Avenza towards the south of Lombardy.
Terna's Plan also provides for new infrastructure for the electricity grid of Olympic and Paralympic Games “Milan-Cortina 2026” with works with reduced landscape impact. Lombardy will be affected in Valtellina by the new one Livigno–Premadio electrical connection, in the province of Sondrio. The infrastructure, currently under construction, includes a power line of approximately 20 km made up of two underground cable lines that run almost completely along the same route.
In view of the sporting event, the new one is also under construction Premadio Electrical Station, designed in compact armored technology with reduced environmental impact. They complete the picture four new connections in underground cables (two of which are already in regular operation) serving the electricity grid of Milano.
Other interventions
The company then also planned an important project rationalization of the electricity grid between Media Valtellina and Valchiavenna. The intervention will make it possible to increase the efficiency of the electricity network in the area between the provinces of Sondrio, Bergamo, Lecco and Milan, while at the same time promoting the integration of the energy produced by the hydroelectric plants in northern Lombardy. With important benefits at an environmental and social level: the construction of the new 380 kV lines will make it possible to demolish approximately 480 kilometers of lines (over 1.300 pylons) which affect the territory from Valtellina to the gates of Milan.
Among other relevant interventions in the Lombardy area, the rearrangement of the electricity grid Brescia, rationalization of the electricity grid in Sabbia Valley, and an intervention plan for the resilience of the network in areas exposed to severe meteorological events, due in particular to strong winds and ice. The company, concludes the note, has also committed to signing a new Memorandum of Understanding both to renew existing agreements and to promote collaboration and discussion with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the action lines of the Plan
