Panama Canal, Gupc: impossible to continue work

News from Panama. For the Gupc Consortium (which includes the Spanish Sacyr, the Italian Salini Impregilo and the Belgian Jan de Nul) it does not deem it practicable to continue the works for widening the canal due to the persistence of the conditions which had led the consortium to threaten the blocking of operations, i.e. the payment of the extra costs that arise during the works.

The decision of the board of the consortium on the matter is awaited, which should emerge in these hours in view of the contractual deadline of 20 January (with possible suspension on 21 January), after having relaunched yesterday the proposal for "co-financing" of unexpected costs pending the international arbitration decision.

Gupc "hopes that a solution" of mutual satisfaction can be found with the Panamanian Canal Authority (ACP) so that construction can continue without delay.
