European banks, on the first possible maturity date, repaid the ECB a total sum dthe 137,159 billion euros to repay the funds from the three-year Ltro auctions, a figure far higher than the estimates of analysts, who expected an initial repayment of around 84 billion.
This was announced by the Frankfurt institute, in a note in which it specifies that 278 banks have made the payments. However, the ECB has not released the data for individual banks, but only the aggregate. In recent days, many European banks had announced their intention to repay long-term loans, especially the large banks in Northern Europe, which are, in many cases, in a situation of excess liquidity.
