Pietro Marzotto, Mr. Conte as his Vadagno workers affectionately called him, died yesterday at the age of 80 in the Portogruaro hospital where he had been hospitalized for heart problems.
Heir to an entrepreneurial dynasty "which reached 70 grandchildren and was shattered in the sixth generation", as he himself said, Marzotto was a leading figure in Italian capitalism.
He had tried to relaunch Marzotto and transform it into a public company but unfortunately without success. So he threw himself on Peck, a temple of Milanese gastronomy that he first bought, cultivated with passion and then passed on to his children.
Entrepreneur kind and loved by his workers but also argumentative and determined when needed, Pietro Marzotto was vice president of Confindustria and resigned from the Cavalieri del Lavoro when the leaders of the association had refused to remove the title from Silvio Berlusconi after his conviction for tax fraud.
