The small fraction of Aranova, at the gates of Rome, today hosts one of the telephone exchanges most advanced in Italy in terms of sustainability. FiberCop, the Italian company that operates in the network infrastructure market, has in fact started a experimental project which combines renewable energy production, advanced storage systems and intelligent management of consumption. The opportunity to discover this plant was the Green Energy Day 2025, a national event dedicated to ecological transition, held on April 12th.
Photovoltaic and batteries: energy autonomy for hours
At the heart of the project is a photovoltaic system 12 kilowatts, integrated with a system of 2.000 Ah lithium-ion batteries, which allows the power plant to operate autonomously up to 10 consecutive hours. This means that, even in the event of problems on the national electricity grid, the structure is able to ensure continuity of telephone service, without interruptions or disruptions.
But the real strong point is the intelligent energy management system: a software that coordinates production, storage and consumption in real time, optimizing energy use and significantly reducing dependence on the traditional electricity grid.
Energy efficiency and sustainability
In addition to generation and storage, the plant is equipped with a 400Vac/48Vdc converter station, which adapts and distributes energy to the various devices in the plant, ensuring maximum efficiency. The picture is completed by a system of free cooling, which uses outside air to cool the systems, reducing the energy consumption of traditional air conditioning systems.
The results, already in the experimental phase, speak clearly: there is a average savings of 25% on the electrical energy needed for the functioning of telecommunications equipment, with peaks reaching 39% during the summer. Extending the analysis to the entire needs of the plant (including accessory services), the average saving is around 13 %, with peaks of 22% in the warmest months.
A pilot project destined to set an example
The Aranova power plant represents a first step towards a new network infrastructure model, capable of combining technology, reliability and reduced environmental impact. FiberCop's goal is to extend similar solutions to other locations nationwide, making the telecommunications sector increasingly green.
In line with the mission of Green Energy Day, the initiative demonstrates how even traditional infrastructures can be rethought in an ecological key, becoming protagonists of the energy transition. Aranova is not just a technical experiment, but a concrete symbol of a sustainable future.
“The project carried out by FiberCop in the Aranova power plant” – he declares Daniele Nutini, Head of Decommissioning, Technical Infrastructures & Energy Engineering, – “represents a concrete example of how the telecommunications sector can decisively undertake the road to sustainability. At a time when ecological transition is a shared priority, we demonstrate that it is possible to evolve by adopting innovative solutions based on the use of renewable energy and careful management of resources. The Aranova power plant is tangible proof of this: it represents acutting-edge infrastructure where technology is not just a tool for progress, but a true strategic ally for building a greener, more efficient and environmentally friendly future”.
