I power consumptions in Italy they have returned to pre-Covid levels. This is certified by Terna, according to which in 2021 the requirement was equal to 318,1 billion kWh, a value up 5,6% compared to 2020 and in line (-0,5%) with 2019.
In details, renewables they covered 36% of electricity demand, also in this case returning to the volumes of 2019: thanks to the favorable climatic conditions, with the overall production of wind and photovoltaic power reaching the highest levels ever. "As regards the IMCEI index, Terna's provisional data indicate that industrial consumption grew by 10,5% compared to 2020, driven in particular by the mechanical and iron and steel sectors", the company underlines in a note by Stefano Donnarumma.
From a geographical point of view, the growth in electricity consumption concerned all geographical areas: +5,2% in the North, +6,4% in the Center and +5,9% in the South and on the islands. The demand for electricity was met for 86,5% with domestic production and for the remainder (13,5%) with the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries.
" net national production (278 billion kWh) increased by 2,4% compared to 2020. Wind (+10,8%), thermal (+3,8%) and photovoltaic (+2,1%) sources of production grew ). Water (-5,4%) and geothermal (-2,1%) sources of production are down”, explains Terna.
As for the solo month of December, the demand for electricity amounted to 27,4 billion kWh, +5,9% compared to December 2020 and +0,8% compared to November 2021 (seasonally adjusted values and adjusted for calendar and temperature effects). The IMCEI index, on the other hand, recorded a positive change of 1,4% compared to December 2020, thanks to the performance of the mechanical and construction materials sectors, while at the economic level there was a decrease of 1,1% (on November 2021).
