“You can count on us. Brazil is ready to assume its responsibilities in a cooperative spirit, but I'm sure I'm also expressing the point of view of emerging economies. We are partners of the EU”. With these words, the Brazilian president, Dilma Roussef, extends his hand to Europe. Reassuring phrases arrived at the end of a summit with the president of the EU, Herman Van Rompuy, and of the European Commission, Josè Manuel Barroso.
"It is a dialogue in which all of South America must take part - added Roussef - and it is precisely to coordinate common positions that the finance ministers of Unasur", the Union of South American nations, will meet in the next few days. It is therefore "fundamental for political coordination between countries to cope with the current economic situation". The only way out of the crisis, according to the Brazilian president, is to stimulate growth by managing public finances responsibly: "It is not enough to adopt recessive budgetary measures".
