Telecom Italy remains the leading company on the Italian fixed telephony market, but is overtaken on mobile by Wind and 3 Italia, after their integration. To detect it is the search for Mediobanca R&D on the Italian telecommunications industry, which underlines how, in June 2015, Telecom Italia's market share in fixed telephony was 59,3%, down by 12,3% on 2010.

On the other hand, the mobile market share was substantially stable (32,3%), even if, as mentioned, Telecom's historic leadership was undermined by the marriage of Wind Telecomunicazioni (the mobile market share was 22,9% before the integration ) and 3 Italy (10,3%), which in June had a share of 33,8%.

On the front of the broadband connection Telecom is the leading operator with 47,5% of the market (-7,4% compared to 2010) followed by Wind (15,3% and +0,5 points over the five-year period), Fastweb (14,7% and +3 %i since 2010) and by Vodafone (12,7% and +0,8% since 2010).

In 2014, reports the survey, the revenues of the Italian market amounted to 32 billion euros, -24% compared to 2010 and -7,7% compared to 2013.

In the period considered, the six main telecommunications operators present on the Italian market accumulated total net losses of 3,1 billion euros. The largest losses were recorded by Telecom Italia (-2,6 billion), which was affected by the write-downs of intangibles and goodwill recorded in the five-year period.

Also in the red were Wind (-1,7 billion), 3 Italia (-410 million), Fastweb (-344 million) and Tiscali (-99 million), which always closed their financial statements at a loss in the five-year period under review. The only group capable of accumulating profits was Vodafone Italia, with assets of 2,1 billion.

A European level Deutsche Telekom is the largest company in the sector by turnover with over 62,4 billion in revenues in 2014 followed by Vodafone (54 billion) which is the absolute leader in mobile and Telefonica (50 billion). Always remaining within the continental borders, Telecom stands out for its industrial profitability and productivity, with a net operating margin, in 2014, equal to 20,6% of turnover. from an equity point of view, Vodafone has the most solid financial structure, with the lowest incidence of financial debt on shareholders' equity (51,8%).

Despite the recent slowdown, Italy remains in the top positions in Europe for the rate of mobile phone penetration, with about 1,5 sims per person. The ratio between SIM cards and population, in fact, stood at 154% at the end of 2014, down on the 159% of the previous year, but still in third place in Europe after Finland (172%) and Russia (168%).
