Terna obtained from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, with a decree dated 31 January 2024, theauthorization for the construction of the Adriatic Link, the underwater power line that it will unite the Marche and Abruzzo.
The electrical infrastructure, a total of 250 km long, of which 210 km in submarine cable, will allow the integration of renewable sources and the achievement of energy transition objectives. For the work, the company led by the CEO, Giuseppina Di Foggia, will invest approximately 1,3 billion euros.
The development work, included in the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC) and considered strategic by the Regulatory Authority, will strengthen energy exchange in the central part of the Peninsula, guaranteeing security and flexibility to the national electricity system and promoting the increase in energy from renewable sources.
The Adriatic Link project
The electrical connection, characterized by eco-sustainable technology, will include two submarine cables of approximately 210 km at a maximum depth of 100 meters and two terrestrial cables of 40 km. The conversion stations they will be positioned near the existing electricity stations in Cepagatti (PE), in Abruzzo, and Fano (PU), in the Marche.
The connection will increase the exchange capacity between the Central-South and Central-North areas of the country by approximately 1.000 MW, facilitating the transfer of energy produced by wind and photovoltaic systems of the South towards the consumption centers of the North.
The infrastructure will guarantee an improvement in the safety and reliability of the transmission service along the Adriatic backbone and will promote more efficient use of the national electricity generation park, as well as greater integration of renewable sources.
“With the ministerial authorization of the Adriatic link, another step is taken in the path undertaken by the State with Terna to achieve the Euro-unitary objectives of decarbonisation of the Italian energy system in line with the objectives outlined by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan” declared the Minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
