"We are participating in the 5G experimentation called by the Mise and over the next 3-4 years we will activate a whole series of experiments applied to the various industrial sectors". This was stated by Aldo Bisio, CEO of Vodafone Italia, on the occasion of the Galileo Innovation Festival, explaining that "5G will be the true enabling infrastructure of the Internet of Things which represents one of the great innovation trends" and "this it will change our ability to connect objects. Today in the world we have 1 billion connected objects, it is estimated that we will have 12 billion connected objects in 2021".
Bisio added that “with 5G the speed of the networks increases, but the most important aspect is the latency, the network's ability to react. For applications such as assisted driving or self-driving cars we have to go below the timing of the nervous system. The latency times of 5G will be 2-3 milliseconds, against today's 20/30 milliseconds". Furthermore, “the transition between 4G and 5G, with the Internet of Things, will allow us to completely redesign the world in which each industrial or service sector will do things. With assisted driving, for example, cars will communicate with each other and with road infrastructure, such as traffic lights", explained Bisio, concluding: "We are also witnessing an exponential growth in traffic generated by people, which is growing in Italy by 50 % the year. All of us will become great content publishers. It is estimated that a digital native will produce 5 Terabytes of data in his lifetime, corresponding to about 5000 DVDs”.
