Baggage handling, Hong Kong airport chooses Leonardo

Leonardo's baggage handling technology has been chosen for Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal 1. The "Primary Sorter Replacement" programme, launched by the Asian airport, provides for the replacement of the current tilt-tray technology primary sorters with Leonardo's innovative MBHS® (Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System). The company will be responsible for project management and the design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and testing of the new cross-belt sorters and all related hardware and software components. In 2018, the Asian hub served over 74,7 million passengers bound for 220 destinations, earning an excellent reputation in baggage delivery and winning important awards, in part due to the adoption of new and advanced technologies: “Airport of the Year 2018” (International Airport Review) and Best Airport in China 2018 (Business Traveler China Awards).

To meet the airport's stringent standards, Leonardo will supply Terminal 1 with four MBHS® crossbelt sorters, 18 induction and 14 barcode reading stations with radio frequency identification (RFID) capability. Leonardo will integrate the new project with the airport's existing IT systemsensuring the continuity of services. Peculiarities of the solution will be variable speed control to optimize baggage flow, the ability to dynamically re-center the baggage position on the sorter, full control of loading and unloading trajectories and the ability to handle all types of baggage, including non-standard, i.e. large or bulky objects. Leonardo is one of the main integrators of baggage handling systems, which see in the MBHS® one of the leading technologies.

The company has achieved a leadership position in the international baggage handling systems market, with solutions supplied to some of the major airports including Rome Fiumicino, Zurich, Geneva, Paris Orly, Lyon, Mulhouse, Athens and other hubs in Europe, as well as Kuwait International Airport and others in the Middle East and Asia. Leonardo's MBHS® system is certified and approved by BNP Associates Inc., a leading aviation consultancy firm.
